SAD!! Tears in Lokoja as VC Leaves Office

There were tears in Lokoja as the VC of the Federal University of Lokoja left office after been among those sacked. He was among the 13 Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities that were sacked by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.
The Federal University, Lokoja, popularly known as Fulokoja, is a federal government university in Lokoja, in North-Central Nigeria. Lokoja lies at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers.

The Federal University, Lokoja was established in February 2011 by the Federal Government of Nigeria as a result of indispensable need to create more universities in the country.
As the VC left office, the staff who worked closely with him were in tears.
Some members of staff of the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi state, were pictured weeping as their pioneer Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi, leaves office following his sack by the Federal government last week.

Founded in memory of James Alan Cox, a television photojournalist, The James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photojournalists aims to provide financial support to student photographers of high school and college age. Through a variety of funding, including equipment purchases and scholarships for college and technical school classes, the foundation’s mission is to expand educational and developmental opportunities for student photographers demonstrating interest, talent and financial need.

Type of Awards:

  • Five (5) Digital Cameras will be awarded to five (5) high school students. (High school applicants should only submit still photographs. The video awards are for college and graduate students only.)
  • Five (5) $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to five (5) college or technical school students, payable to their school. Four awards will be for video work while one will be for still photography.
  • Starting in 2013, one (1) $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to one (1) graduate student, payable to their school, for video work.
Focus of work and entries: PHOTOJOURNALISM. (Please see the 2014 or previous years' scholarship recipients to view examples of winning photographs and videos.) Scholarships will be awarded to those students whose work “tells a story”. This is a fairly broad topic and may include a variety of subject matter and approaches (breaking news, sporting events, etc.) Jim Cox, who was a television photojournalist in Phoenix, always “told a story” through his work, whether it was in video or still photography.
Scholarship applications must be submitted between July 15, 2015 and Midnight, the Evening of November 15th, 2015.
Scholarships will be announced and awarded in early to mid-December.

The Intel STS is an international science competition for both the youngsters and adults.
The Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) application for 2016 will open on May 10, 2015 for students who will be attending their last year of secondary school in Fall 2015.  All potential entrants should read the Rules and Entry Instructions to be certain they are eligible.

Description

Valeo is offering young students worldwide the opportunity to make the car of 2030 and the way it’s used more intelligent, intuitive, green and fun. Comprising teams of two to five people, students from any discipline can take part by presenting a relevant, innovative project in English. The aim is to stimulate the students’ creativity, enabling them to form multidisciplinary teams. The Valeo Innovation Challenge is part of Valeo’s innovation strategy, supported by the company’s annual Research and Development budget of over EUR 1 billion.
The aim of the contest is to reward an innovative automobile-related project (technological innovation or idea for new ways of using the car) that is the product of the imagination of students worldwide.
Valeo launched the 3rd edition of its contest, the “Valeo Innovation Challenge 2016″, which offers students from around the world the opportunity to become players in automotive innovation. They are required to come up with an innovation which would, between now and 2030, make the car and the way it is used more intelligent, intuitive, green and fun. These students are being asked to develop bold solutions for the society of tomorrow.

Eligibility

  • The contest is open to students worldwide who have completed their high school education, with one entry per person (same name and same e-mail address);
  • Contest entrants must be able to travel outside their country of residence and possess, by October 2016, a passport that is still valid for six months after the date scheduled for the prize giving (October 2016);
  • Each team leader must plan to collate all of the original banking information and documents that will be required prior to payment of the financial support in phase 2 – creation of proof of concept (see article 12): IBAN, SWIFT numbers, letter from bank certifying that entrant is an account holder.

Prize

The 24 projects selected for the model phase will receive financial assistance in accordance with the content of Article 12.
A first prize of EUR 100,000 will be awarded on completion of the contest in each of the following categories:
  • The innovation prize for the best technological innovation;
  • The idea prize for new ways of using the car.
The second prize for each in these two categories is EUR 10,000.

Application

The projects submitted online must meet the following criteria and technical constraints:
  • Documents must be drafted in English;
  • Phase 1 – Presentation of the project (5 pages maximum) with illustrations authorizes (photos, diagrams).
Criteria taken into account:
  • Bold, innovative and original idea of the project (50%);
  • Challenges and relevance of the problem dealt with and factoring in of society’s expectations (20%);
  • Knowledge of technical / related matters (10%);
  • Feasibility of the demonstration model (10%);
  • Quality of presentation (10%).

Anita Borg was a believer of technological, economic, change in the technology world.



The ScholarshipGoogle Anita Borg Scholarship recipients will each receive a € 7,000 (or equivalent) award for the 2016-2017 academic year. A group of female undergraduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background, passion for increasing the involvement of women in computer science, and demonstrated leadership. As an Anita Borg Scholar, you will participate in a unique program that includes professional development as well as outreach in your community which kicks-off at the Scholars Retreat in summer 2016.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:
  • Be a female student currently enrolled at a university for the 2015-2016 academic year
  • Intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD program at a university in Europe, the Middle East or Africa for the 2016-2017 academic year
  • Be studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics or a closely related technical field

OBAFEMI AWOLOWO MEDICINE PROFESSOR DIES IN OFFICE! HOW SAD


What a loss to the Obafemi Awolowo University, as she loses her profesor of medicine.
A Professor of Medicine at the Obafemi Awolowo University Prof. Solomon Ogunniyi, reportedly passed away in his office yesterday Thursday November 5th. The former provost of the college of health sciences, was said to have passed out in his office and no one noticed for a long time. It was when people noticed he’d been in his office for a while without exiting that they went in to check on him and found his lifeless body slumped in his chair. Cause of death is not immediately known but no foul play is suspected.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
